The spring has finally arrived. For many of the locals living in Cedar Park and Leander, spring is their favorite season because it’s not too hot or too cold. With the April showers and spring flowers, we are not only enjoying the warmer weather, but we’re giving our homes some much-needed TLC.

Now that spring is in the air, it’s time for the annual spring cleaning. Often, this means getting the windows professionally cleaned, checking the HVAC system, cleaning the carpets, dusting for cobwebs, replacing air filters, mowing the lawn, planting flowers outside, cleaning the chimney, and as a finishing touch – checking on our plumbing and making sure it’s in tip-top shape.

Since you’re spring cleaning, it’s time to ensure your home’s drainage system is working at its absolute best. Here are some plumbing tips from our Cedar Park plumbers to help you maintain your plumbing system so you can avoid preventable, costly repairs:

  • If your pipes haven’t been cleaned in a while, consider professional drain cleaning. Drain cleaning prevents clogs and ensures your pipes are working smoothly and efficiently.
  • Clean out all bathroom sinks and shower drains with a Zip-It tool (available at Superstores and home improvement stores). The goal is to remove the sludge and hair that has collected before it leads to a clog.
  • Place strainers on all bathroom drain to prevent hair and soap scum from collecting the leading to a stubborn clog.
  • Drain your water heater tank to remove sediment buildup which reduces efficiency and shortens the tank’s lifespan. Either follow the manufacturer’s directions or hire a professional plumber to do it – this should be done annually!
  • If your water heater is more than 15 years old, consider replacing it with a brand new, energy-efficient model.
  • Clean out all drains, downspouts, and gutters so they are free of debris.
  • Check all faucets for leaks.
  • If you have an infrequently used drain, pour a gallon of water into it. This will prevent odors and sewer gasses from entering your home.
  • Clean out the traps that are located below all sinks, including the one in the laundry room.
  • If you have any slow-moving drains, snake them now before they lead to a bigger problem.
