How Long Do Bathtubs Last?

If you’re like most people, you take pride in a clean home, a clean bathroom, and a nice, sparkling clean bathtub. Bathtubs may not be “fun” to clean, but clean bathtubs sure make a bathroom look its best. But what if all of a sudden, no amount of scrubbing, bleach, or shower and bathtub cleaner seems to work? What if your bathtub seems to look dingy no matter what you do?

If your bathtub is around 20 years old, it may have seen better days. Or, if your bathtub is even around 35 or 40 years old, but you refinished it about 20 years ago, you may have the same issues – it just can’t seem to get clean no matter what! If you have an aging bathtub, it may be time for a replacement.

Bathtub Removal: Not a DIY Project

Bathtub replacements are not DIY projects; brand-new bathtubs are not that expensive, but the replacement of a bathtub is more involved than the $300 to $600 for the bathtub itself. Why? Because, bathrooms and homes for that matter, are actually built around bathtubs. To replace a bathtub, you need to physically get it out and have it properly disposed of.

If the home is particularly old, tile will probably be worn away and the new tub may not fit the old plumbing fixtures. So, it’s common for homeowners to need to hire a plumber, but sometimes it’s necessary to hire a tile man too.

Signs your bathtub needs attention:

  • The finish on the bathtub is chipped.
  • The tub has changed colors over the years; for example, a pearly white tub is now yellow.
  • The original glaze has worn away and the tub no longer shines.
  • The surface of the glaze has worn out so much, it no longer keeps dirt and other contaminants out. Even if bleach cleans it for a short period, after a few days it gets dirty all over again because the surface is porous.
